Lithography is a method of developing and printing an image from the surface of a flat stone. By building an image using oil based media, the artist etches the image in to the stone and can print multiple copies on to paper. The stone may be reused and even the same image may be modified and printed repeatedly, or worked through a series of “states”.
I love this versatile technique as the stone allows me to “push” and “pull” an image as I take it through various stages of development. I can build the image up by adding pigment and greasy media. I can also subtract from the image and get amazing results by scratching the surface of the stone with a variety of abrasive materials. I like to incorporate a variety of mark making in my imagery through this process, and the stone is the most sumptuous surface to work on!
